Mayoral Candidate Oona King follows on from Mayor of London Boris Johnson on the topic ‘Diversity in a Recession’. In this address Oona King discusses the need invest in the future of our youth by giving them new horizons, by understanding how bad the situation is and creating youth facilities open at hours when anti-social behaviour is likely to occur. Disadvantage in London breeds so many problems; these are compounded by poor housing, parenting, educational attainment and discrimination. King stands by the principle ‘prevention is better than a cure’ and calls for a radical new approach to break the cycle of disadvantage, increasing unemployment and crime that occur because of the recession. Living in the east end, raising two adopted children from the care system, King is running against former Labour Mayor Ken Livingston for the chance to run as labour candidate in the next mayoral election. If King succeeds she would be not only the first female Mayor of London but also the first mayor from an ethnic minority.
