Emma Peters, Executive Director of Planning, Regeneration & Conservation, London Borough of Croydon, discusses the re-engineering and re-invigorating of the city centre and explains how important design issues and extensive public involvement have been in contributing to the vision of Croydon becoming more ‘liveable’. In the late 1950s, Croydon became a development focus as no more office space was permitted in the centre of London, so the focus for new offices moved to Croydon. Today, Croydon is a ‘office centre’ due to the decisions and Planning Policies made in the 60s, a million square feet of office space is vacant with 300 people living in the central area - Emma says this adds up to a problem. A second problem is people’s visions of developments in Croydon, such as the idea of building a stadium. The project focuses on the broken places and these consist of: East Croydon, West Croydon, Weliesley Road, College Green, Mid Croydon. As well as CMC Transport and a joined-up delivery of a public realm.
