In this talk Kevin McCloud addresses the RIBA to present the Annual Lecture, which is traditionally given by a non-architect on a subject of direct relevance to the built environment. In his lecture entitled ‘Jam and Knitting in the Urban Fabric: Thoughts on Rebuilding Communities’, Kevin McCloud discusses the concept of context. Kevin McCloud, founder of sustainable residential development company Hab Oakus and presents the Channel 4 series Grand Designs, argues that grand designs will not solve all the problems of our cities. Instead he proposes that true sustainability will be achieved when architects get together with residents to make the best of what is already there. Using examples from his recent visit to Dharavi, Mumbai; which is one of the largest slums in Asia; Kevin outlines how we in the West need to need to curb our enthusiasm for status, acquiring stuff and materialism while developing a keener, richer, more elaborate set of connections with the people that live around us and the place we inhabit.
