Jan Gehl, eminent Danish architect and leading expert in the field of Urban Planning, advises many urban design and public projects around the world on the form and use of public spaces to create sustainable cities. In 2004 Gehl carried out an important study into the quality of the public realm in London, commissioned by Transport for London and Central London Partnership. He also supported the City of Wakefield and the town of Castleford in developing and delivering better public spaces, as part of an initiative known as 'The Castleford Project'. In 2007 he was hired by the New York City Department of Transportation to re-imagine New York City streets by introducing designs to improve life for pedestrians and cyclists. In February 2008, Gehl Architects, won the high-profile competition to transform Hull's historic Fruit Market site.
